Canyons of Montenegro

On this trip we take you to the inland of Montenegro with beautiful green mountains, rivers and canyons.

We depart early in the morning and drive up the hill enjoying the sight of the coast.

Further along the coast to the central part of Montenegro, Zeta plain and Skadar lake – the biggest lake on the Balkan peninsula.

We cross the bridge above the lake, surrounded by lavish vegetation, water lilies and reeds, little fisher villages.

Road continues through the Zeta plain, fertile lowland in Montenegro and capital of Montenegro Podgorica.

First coffee break will be few kilometers after Podgorica.

After coffee break road running within the Moraca River Canyon which is one of the most spectacular roads in Europe.

Moraca River Canyon separates Moraca range from Sinjajevina range. It’s located between Podgorica and Kolasin. This part of the canyon is called ”Platije„. The highway is built along the edge of the narrow canyon.

Riddled with countless cliff-side bends and tunnels, this road will leave an impression and you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the landscape that surrounds you.

The Moraca river will show us the way through this breathtaking canyon to the Moraca monastery, which you can visit optional.

From monastery Moraca is scenic drive near towns Kolasin and Mojkovac where we can make break for optional lunch.

Continuing our journey over the picturesque mountains, we reach the National park Durmitor and Tara River, also known as ”The Tear of Europe„. Its canyon (1300 m) is the second deepest in the world, after Colorado.

Along the Tara river canyon, the dense pine forests are interspersed with clear lakes and harbour a wide range of endemic flora.

Of particular importance is an old-growth forest of European Black Pine, where 400 year-old specimens can reach heights above 50 metres.

At one viewpoint we will make a photo break and a short walk that you could hear the river Tara and feel the fresh air of the thick pine forests.

We continue our drive through National park Durmitor up to the famous bridge called ”Djurdjevica Tara„ a true masterpiece of architecture built before the Second World War.

A five arch crossing over the Tara River is an irreplaceable photo model. The highlight of the excursion is the view from the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge.

In order to show you more of the natural beauty of Montenegro, we have chosen the other way back, up to the forests and meadows of National park Durmitor.
